September Update 10/05/2010

Kaps for Kids has come and gone and the Abbey Phi Kaps are on to another good cause.

Movember is a project affiliated with teh Prostate Cancer Assosiation and the Livestrong Organization that raises men's health awareness. What makes this cause a little bit different than anything we've ever done before is that we are literally helping to change the face of men's health by growing mustaches for the entire month of November and raising money by starting different Mustache Teams. (Think of it as a new take on "No Shave November".)

Advertisements go out today, October 5th, and sign-ups for on-campus teams start October 18th. The official Kick Off Party won't be until November 1st, but we figured that the earlier we get the word out the better!

The way this fundraiser works is that someone starts up a team and becomes the team leader. The team leader grows a mustache and starts up a following of team members, who help raise money for their "Mo Team." All the teams on campus will be signed up under Phi Kappa Theta NC Alpha Rho on MOVEMBER.COM and the money raised will be donated in full at the end of November (Movember).

In addition to being able to shave off your mustache at the end of the month, all teams involved are invited to the First Annual Movember Banquet. It's just to serve as a thank you to all those who participated, and also for everyone to have a good time and officially cast their vote for "Man of Movember."

This project is especially important to us, because one of our very own Alums is a survivor of testicular cancer, and has agreed to serve as guest of honor at our Movember Banquet.

HAPPY SHAVING!

August Update 09/06/2010

The past few weeks have been very hectic for Phi Kappa Theta Alpha Rho, with brothers moving in and starting classes only two weeks ago. However, the brothers have already been working very hard to set up the best year possible for the chapter.

The first official brother meeting went over smoothly, mainly focusing on due-collecting and the official turnover to our new President, Matt Beerse. Also pitched at this meeting were the two major charity events for the fall semester: Movember and Kaps for Kids (both of which are either off to a great start or are being prepared for a great start for the not-to-distant future) as well as possible fundraisers, alumni events and social events for the chapter.

Kaps for Kids is already off to a great start. Alpha Rho Staff made buckets for the charity and distributed them to four local basrs in the downtown Belmont area. All three of them immediately showed enthusiasm for this -- maybe they just wanted someone to finally take bottle caps off their hands? We're not exactly sure, however all three of the bars ensured us that we'd hit the jackpot. We've established a method for collecting the bottle caps as well. Every Sunday, brothers will collect the plastic shopping bags in each bucket filled with caps, and replace it with a new bag. This will be the brothers' responsibility until we have a group of associate members to collect them (in order for them to feel involved with the fundraiser, since the creation of the artwork will be the brothers' job) FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT KAPS FOR KIDS, VISIT THE FACEBOOK PAGE HERE: KapsforKids

Alpha Rho has also been hard at work planning Rush (September 13th), Homecoming, several Alumni and on-campus social events. More details on these as they come closer.

First Post! 06/24/2010

As you can see, NC Alpha Rho has a new website! For the next few weeks, we'll be making regular changes and updates. You will notice that a few of our pages either don't have anything on them, or are in the process of being completed. Bare with us! It's a work in progess, and will be completed BEFORE the school year starts on August 24th, 2010! Until then, feel free to check back for new additions to the site!

Things to be completed for the months of June / July:

- "Our Mission" to reflect Mission of National Board of Trustees
- "Members" section to updated with full bios of all current members
- Chapter News via blog to be kept
    - Results of recent elections for 2010-2011 school year to be posted
    - List of tentative Social Events for 2010-2011 school year to be posted
